The Golf World's Newest Ambassadors: A Tale of Two Champions
Get ready for an exciting chapter in the world of golf as Zurich Insurance introduces its fresh roster of ambassadors for the upcoming season. Stepping into the spotlight are Shane Lowry and Ben Griffin, two golfers with distinct paths to success, each bringing a unique story and a wealth of talent to the Zurich brand.
But here's where it gets intriguing: these ambassadors aren't just chosen for their golf prowess. Zurich's President of Customer and Distribution Management, John Diaz, reveals a deeper strategy. "It's not just about the golf," he says. "We look for values alignment. Shane and Ben embody the Zurich brand's integrity, resilience, and teamwork."
Lowry, a seasoned pro with over 15 years in the game, has consistently ranked in the top 50 worldwide. He's known for his bold personality, both on and off the course, and recently added RBC and Consello to his sponsorship portfolio. Diaz describes Lowry's appeal as "down-to-earth" and "super approachable," making him a natural fit for Zurich's brand image.
On the other hand, Griffin's journey is a testament to resilience. After struggling financially in 2021, he took a break from professional golf and worked as a mortgage loan officer. But his determination paid off, and he made a remarkable comeback, securing a top-10 spot in the OWGR within just 18 months. Griffin's popularity has soared, and he's set to feature prominently in Netflix's "Full Swing" season. Even during last year's Zurich Classic championship, Griffin's connection with the brand was evident when he shared his recent purchase of a builder's risk policy from Zurich.
"Ben's rise has been meteoric," Diaz enthuses. "He's got a great comeback story."
Both Lowry and Griffin are also involved with TGL, with Lowry representing The Bay GC and Griffin expected to join the New York Golf Club as an alternate. Their management teams are diverse, with Lowry being managed by Brian Moran of Shane Lowry Golf and Griffin's affairs handled by Jeremy Elliott of Sportfive.
Zurich's golf sponsorship portfolio also includes PGA Tour players Billy Horschel and Sahith Theegala, as well as LPGA player Albane Valenzuela. Notably, Collin Morikawa, who was previously with Zurich, is no longer an ambassador.
In addition to these ambassador appointments, Zurich has renewed its title sponsorship with the PGA Tour for the Zurich Classic through 2030. Despite potential changes to the tour schedule, Diaz remains confident in the tournament's enduring relevance.
"The Classic is an important fixture on the PGA Tour calendar," Diaz asserts. "We believe it will always hold a prominent place."
As we await the 2027 schedule, which is expected to be revealed by the tour in March, one thing is clear: Zurich's golf sponsorships are a strategic blend of talent and values, ensuring a bright future for the brand in the world of golf.
