South Carolina's softball team is making headlines by earning a spot in the 2026 Softball America Preseason Top 25 rankings. This recognition comes shortly after three players from the Gamecocks were highlighted in Softball America’s preseason Top 100 list, showcasing the program's growing prominence in collegiate softball.
After an impressive first season under head coach Ashley Chastain Woodard, where they achieved a remarkable journey that led to hosting a Super Regional for the very first time, the Gamecocks have been ranked 16th in this year’s preseason poll. It’s worth noting that last season began with South Carolina unranked, but their hard work and talent culminated in a stunning record of 44 victories.
As the team approaches the new season, they are fueled by the experience gained from being just one win shy of reaching the Women’s College World Series. This experience has significantly elevated expectations and leadership within the squad.
Leading this talented group are three seasoned players: senior first baseman Arianna Rodi, junior second baseman Karley Shelton, and senior catcher Lexi Winters. All three have earned spots on Softball America’s 2026 Preseason Top 100 players list, underscoring their critical roles in the team’s strategy.
Among the fresh talent joining the roster, two freshmen are particularly noteworthy. Utility player Ansley Bennett stands out as a remarkable athlete, having been named the South Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year in both 2023 and 2024. During her senior year at Summerville High School, Bennett achieved an astonishing record of 30-0 as a pitcher, alongside contributing 13 home runs and 41 RBIs. With such accomplishments, she is anticipated to take on significant responsibilities both on the mound and at the plate as she embarks on her collegiate career.
The second promising freshman, Kai Byars, has made her mark as a top recruit from Virginia, earning the title of the No. 2 player in the state. As a three-time all-state player during her time at Hanover High School in Mechanicsville, Virginia, Byars is expected to make a swift impact in the Gamecocks’ outfield. Both Bennett and Byars have also been included in Softball America’s Freshman Watch List, highlighting their potential to shine early in their college careers.
Looking ahead, the Southeastern Conference (SEC) is poised to be fiercely competitive this season, having concluded the previous year with 12 teams featured in the final Top 25 rankings. South Carolina finds itself ranked 10th among SEC programs, just behind Clemson, which sits at 9th in the current poll.
The Gamecocks are set to kick off their season against Virginia Tech on Thursday, February 5, at 6 p.m. at Beckham Field. This matchup promises to be an exciting start to the season as fans eagerly anticipate how these talented athletes will perform on the field.
