Scarlets' European Dream Alive! | Champions Cup Knockout Race (2026)

The Scarlets are still clinging to their hopes of advancing in the European knockout stages, despite suffering their third consecutive defeat in this year's Champions Cup. Their recent match against Pau ended in a high-scoring 47-38 loss, yet they managed to secure a crucial second losing bonus point, which could play an important role as they navigate through Pool 4.

As the competition heads into its final round of fixtures next weekend, the top four teams will earn a spot in the last sixteen of the Champions Cup. Meanwhile, teams finishing in fifth place will drop into the Challenge Cup at the same stage.

Mathematically speaking, the Scarlets still have a chance to break into the top four, but it would require them to achieve a bonus-point victory against the Northampton Saints, who currently lead the English Premiership. Additionally, they would need to rely on Pau faltering against the Bulls.

However, aiming for fifth place appears to be a more realistic objective for Dwayne Peel's team as they gear up for their match against Northampton on Sunday, January 18, at 15:15 GMT.

"It's definitely disappointing to face another loss," Peel remarked following the defeat to Pau. "However, I did notice some positive aspects in our performance compared to our previous two matches, and we still have a tangible opportunity to finish in fifth place.

"The Bulls will be traveling, and we have our own journey to Franklin's Gardens, which is an excellent venue for rugby — I've had my own experiences playing there — against a team brimming with talent.

"This presents a significant challenge and a pivotal week for us, but it's encouraging that we are still in the race, and that's what we can ask for: a chance to pursue our goals."

The Scarlets made their return to Europe’s elite competition with a narrow one-point defeat against the Bristol Bears, who, like the Saints, are performing exceptionally well in their league. Following that, they faced the formidable French side Bordeaux-Begles. Despite being outmatched, the Scarlets held their own against the reigning champions, who boast stars such as Damian Penaud and Louis Bielle-Biarrey.

In their match against Pau, which fielded a mostly reserve team, the Scarlets witnessed firsthand why Pau currently sits second in the Top 14, as they delivered a clinical performance, scoring seven tries.

Looking back on their campaign, Peel shared, "We’ve encountered three quality opponents in this competition, demonstrating that we can compete at this level. Perhaps a lucky bounce or a favorable TMO decision could shift the momentum in our favor one day, but until then, we’ll continue to work hard and strive for improvement.

"Saints are an exceptionally strong attacking team, and conceding over 40 points is certainly going to be a challenge for us to manage. Our focus must be on capitalizing on opportunities when they arise. We cannot afford to leave points behind next week, as every score will be critically important."

But here's where it gets controversial: given the Scarlets' current form and the challenges ahead, do you think they can realistically turn things around in their favor? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
