Jorja Miller's Birthday Double Helps New Zealand Book Spot in SVNS Perth Decider
Jorja Miller is one win away from a dream birthday celebration at the HSBC SVNS Perth tournament. The Black Ferns Sevens secured their place in the final with a 24-14 victory over France on a scorching Sunday afternoon at HBF Park. This win sets up an intriguing showdown between New Zealand and Australia, who have dominated the SVNS Series all season.
New Zealand, led by the formidable Risi Pouri-Lane, faced a strong French side in their semi-final. The match began with France controlling possession, but New Zealand's defense was solid. Jorja Miller, playing a crucial role, intercepted a pass and tackled Lili Dezou inside her own half. Despite the initial French momentum, New Zealand responded with a swift counterattack. Pouri-Lane's exceptional skills showcased her leadership, as she raced upfield and scored a decisive try.
However, France remained competitive, with Alycia Christiaens scoring a try and maintaining a 14-5 lead. That's when Jorja Miller, celebrating her 22nd birthday, took center stage. She calmly sliced through France's defense, showcasing her composure during a 40-meter carry, resulting in a try.
The Black Ferns Sevens' momentum continued as Stacey Waaka and Mahina Paul combined for a go-ahead score. Waaka, a two-time Olympic gold medallist, demonstrated her leadership by setting up Miller for her second try and retrieving possession for the crucial score. Katelyn Vahaakolo also contributed a double, ensuring New Zealand's victory.
Post-game, Waaka emphasized the importance of teamwork and patience, stating, 'We talked about it, it's small moments that are gonna win it. We always have each other’s back.'
In the other semi-final, Australia, led by co-captain Madison Ashby, defeated the USA 26-5. Maddison Levi and Heidi Dennis scored for Australia, while Su Adegoke scored for the USA. The final will be a thrilling encounter between New Zealand and Australia, with both teams aiming to secure the SVNS Perth championship.
