Discovery have forged a significant new international agreement aimed at bolstering their global collaboration. This pact is not just a routine partnership; it represents a multi-year, multi-territory commitment that will see HBO Max extend its reach into two additional countries.

According to a press release, this agreement marks a "major milestone" in the ongoing relationship between these two media giants. Under the terms of this deal, the distribution of HBO Max through Canal+ will be renewed in several countries, including Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania. Moreover, the service will now also become available in Belgium and Austria. In addition to HBO Max, the distribution rights for popular channels such as Cartoon Network, Cartoonito, and CNN International in Romania, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia will also be extended, along with Warner TV in the Czech Republic.

The impact of this agreement extends beyond Europe, reaching into MultiChoice Group territories across Africa, where the distribution of 12 thematic channels from Warner Bros. Discovery will continue. These include well-known brands like CNN International, Cartoon Network, Discovery Channel, and many others, ensuring a diverse range of content remains accessible to audiences in those regions.

This latest deal builds on previous agreements made in 2024, which included the renewal of an exclusive pay-TV window for films produced by Warner Bros. Pictures. These films will be available six months after their theatrical release in France, along with the incorporation of HBO Max into specific Canal+ offerings.

Interestingly, this announcement comes at a time when Netflix is in the process of acquiring Warner Bros. Discovery. This move could elevate Canal+’s status in the global media arena, especially since the company already has existing distribution partnerships with Netflix. On December 16, Netflix's CEO Ted Sarandos made an unexpected appearance at a Canal+ Group event in Paris, where he discussed his vision for the acquisition. "Our intentions when we buy Warner Bros. will be to continue to release Warner Bros. studio movies in theaters with the traditional windows," Sarandos stated during a discussion with Canal+ chair and CEO Maxime Saada. He added, "Then those movies would flow through the Canal+ output deal. That’s very exciting for us."
